On January 23, 2026, the highly anticipated 16th France International Contemporary Art Fair was grandly inaugurated at the Paris Expo Porte de Versailles. This edition of the salon brought together artists, galleries, and art institutions from around the world, presenting a rich diversity of contemporary artworks spanning painting, sculpture, installation, video, and other media, attracting a large number of art enthusiasts, collectors, curators, and professionals to visit and exchange ideas.

During this edition of the Contemporary Salon,Echo: Contemporary Art Exhibitionat Booth M08 was jointly organized by the France-China Economic, Cultural and Educational Exchange Association,Contemporary Oil Painting, and Beijing Longyin Yafeng Art Museum. With its unique perspective and profound depth, the exhibition offered visitors a refreshing and distinctive artistic experience.

Artist Zhang Zhaoda’s work Awakening Lion garnered considerable attention during Echo: Contemporary Art Exhibition. Visitors paused for extended periods before this ink-on-paper piece, attempting to interpret the moment of “a single glance commanding focus, a single instant breaking the stillness.” As the negative space (liubai) and heavy ink momentum of Eastern ink painting encountered the diverse audiences of Paris—ancient capital of art—the themes of awareness, introspection and resurgence embedded within the work formed a profound resonance with the exhibition theme Echo, responding to contemporary art’s ongoing inquiries into life force and cross-cultural dialogue.

At this exhibition, Awakening Lion met global audiences at the Paris Expo Porte de Versailles, proving that art can indeed traverse mountains and seas, stirring ripples under the gaze of diverse cultural perspectives. On the stage of this International Contemporary Art Fair, Awakening Lion completed its transcendent “awakening” across time and space.

Awakening Lion takes “awakening” as its spiritual core and “lion” as its visual motif, capturing the instantaneous demeanor of a male lion transitioning from stillness to motion. The lion’s head is depicted in profile, its gaze sharp and focused, conveying both the calm of deep submersion and the implicit power of an imminent eruption. The composition employs ink tones of varying density—light and dark mutually generating—to sculpt the lion’s contours. The mane churns like a raging gale, executed with vigorous, rhythmic brushstrokes that manifest the power and tension of life. The blank background forms a stark contrast with the heavy ink momentum, deepening the theme of “awakening”—as if emerging from nothingness into consciousness.

Drawing on the majesty of the awakening lion, the work symbolizes awareness, introspection, and resurgence, presenting a state of life in the Eastern context that moves from silence toward awakening.
